EquipHer Vol. 7: "Empower Your Voice, Impact Your Audience"Sample

Day 2: Communicating with Authenticity
Emotions are an integral part of how God designed us. They are not obstacles to overcome but resources for communicating authentically and meaningfully. Yet, in today’s society—especially in the workplace—we are often taught to hide or suppress our emotions to appear more professional or competent. However, the Bible offers a different perspective: emotions are not barriers but powerful tools when managed with wisdom.
Consider Jesus. His ministry was marked by a profound emotional connection with the people He encountered. Jesus experienced and displayed an array of emotions throughout His ministry. The shortest verse in the Bible, “Jesus wept” (John 11:35), reveals a depth of emotion we often overlook. Jesus was faced with heavy grief over Lazarus’s death and not only showed compassion but shared in the family's period of mourning. This emotional experience teaches us that displaying emotion does not make us weak; in fact, it makes us human and strengthens our authenticity.
In Romans 12:15, Paul urges us to “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” This is a call to share our emotions with others, creating deep and meaningful connections. When we empathize with those around us, we demonstrate authentic love and build relationships founded on trust.
At the same time, God calls us to manage our emotions with wisdom. This does not mean suppressing them but allowing them to be guided by the Holy Spirit. In Ephesians 4:26, the apostle Paul reminds us that while it is natural to experience strong emotions, it is essential that they do not lead us to actions that fail to reflect Christ’s character. Even Jesus, in the temple, expressed righteous anger in a controlled and purposeful way, driven by zeal for His Father’s house (Matthew 21:12). His actions were not impulsive or reckless but grounded in justice and love.
This example encourages us to consider how our emotions, when guided by righteousness and love, can be tools for making a positive difference in the lives of those around us.
Reflective Questions:
- What emotions are you hiding because you believe they make you vulnerable? How can you bring them to God and allow Him to transform them into strength?
- Was there a recent moment when you let your emotions dictate your behavior? How could you respond differently next time, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit?
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the emotions You have placed within me. I ask You to teach me how to live them out under the guidance of Your Spirit so they may become tools for connecting with others. Help me not fear vulnerability but recognize it as a pathway to building authentic relationships. When emotions feel overwhelming, remind me to entrust them to You, knowing You are my strength and refuge. Amen.
