Five Things to Look for in a Future HusbandSample
Emotional maturity is like a GPS for relationships - it helps navigate all that goes into our human emotions and interactions. An emotionally mature man understands his own feelings and can express them in healthy ways. He's not ruled by his emotions but can acknowledge them and respond in ways that honor you and the Lord.
Look for a man who can handle stress and conflict without lashing out or shutting down. Can he disagree with you respectfully? Does he take responsibility for his actions and apologize sincerely when he's wrong? An emotionally mature man will be able to listen actively, empathize with you and others, and communicate his own needs clearly. One of the simplest processes for this is found in James 1:19, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” Look for a man who matches this description - and can apologize when he fails.
Emotional maturity also involves self-awareness and a willingness to grow and be more of who God created him to be. Is he open to feedback? Does he reflect on his behavior and strive to improve it? Emotional maturity is also about being willing to be vulnerable. You are looking for someone who is able to share his fears and weaknesses with you, and not just his strengths.
Remember, emotional maturity is an ongoing process. The key is to find a man committed to the process in his own life and committed to encouraging you in yours.
Prayer:
Father, guide me to a man of integrity who will seek You in all situations and encourage me to do the same. In Jesus' name. Amen.
