From Humbug to Hallelujah: Be Made New
As Christmas morning dawns and church bells ring, a quiet yet powerful sense of hope fills the air. For Scrooge, Christmas Day represents a turning point—a chance to live differently, shaped by the experiences of a single life-changing night. And for us, Christmas reminds us of a hope far greater than any gift or gathering—a hope that came to us through a living Savior, born in a humble manger.
This is the hope we celebrate: “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:11-12).
While most of us may not have a night as dramatic as Scrooge’s, we do have a similar choice. We can wake up on Christmas morning—and every morning after—choosing to live with generosity, joy, contentment, and mercy. We do this by embracing Jesus, the very source of hope, whose birth, life, and sacrifice offer a “today” hope and an eternal promise that never changes. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Are you ready to receive that transforming hope? Maybe it’s been a while since you walked closely with Jesus, or maybe this is the first time you’re hearing about a hope that doesn’t fade with the season. Like Scrooge, we’re invited to face our own brokenness, turn to Jesus who paid the price for us, and step into a new life shaped by grace.
In this season, we have a reason to rejoice that goes beyond holiday cheer—God’s grace has been extended to us through His Son. “God bless us, everyone,” as Tiny Tim said, and through Jesus, God indeed does just that.
Reflection Question: How does Christmas inspire hope in you? Have you received the hope of forgiveness and new life from Jesus? How might you share that eternal hope with others this season?
