         <div class="label">17</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">God&#8217;s Promise to David</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="1CH.17.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, &#8220;Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> is under a tent.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="1CH.17.1"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="1CH.17.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Nathan replied to David, &#8220;Whatever you have in mind, do it, for God is with you.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="1CH.17.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="1CH.17.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying:</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="1CH.17.3"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="1CH.17.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">&#8220;Go and tell my servant David, &#8216;This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="1CH.17.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling place to another. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="1CH.17.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">17:6 </span><span class="ft">Traditionally </span><span class="fqa">judges</span><span class="ft">; also in verse 10</span></span></span><span class="content"> whom I commanded to shepherd my people, &#8220;Why have you not built me a house of cedar?&#8221;&#8198;&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="1CH.17.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="1CH.17.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">&#8220;Now then, tell my servant David, &#8216;This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="1CH.17.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name like the names of the greatest men on earth. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="1CH.17.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="1CH.17.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="1CH.17.10"><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;I declare to you that the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> will build a house for you: </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="1CH.17.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">When your days are over and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="1CH.17.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="1CH.17.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1CH.17.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be established forever.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1CH.17.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="1CH.17.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">David&#8217;s Prayer</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="1CH.17.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="1CH.17.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">Then King David went in and sat before the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, and he said:</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="1CH.17.16"><span class="content">&#8220;Who am I, </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="1CH.17.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="1CH.17.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="1CH.17.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">&#8220;What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant, </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="1CH.17.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. For the sake of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="1CH.17.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="1CH.17.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">&#8220;There is no one like you, </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="1CH.17.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">And who is like your people Israel&#8212;the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="1CH.17.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">You made your people Israel your very own forever, and you, </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, have become their God.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="1CH.17.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="1CH.17.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">&#8220;And now, </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, let the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you promised, </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="1CH.17.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, &#8216;The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel&#8217;s God!&#8217; And the house of your servant David will be established before you.</span></span></div><div class="pm"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="1CH.17.24"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="1CH.17.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">&#8220;You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="1CH.17.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">You, </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, are God! You have promised these good things to your servant. </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="1CH.17.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.&#8221;</span></span></div>

class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="PRO.15.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">The soothing tongue is a tree of life,</span></span></div><div          <div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="LUK.9.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="LUK.9.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="LUK.9.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">He told them: </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Take nothing for the journey&#8212;no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="LUK.9.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="LUK.9.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.&#8221;</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="LUK.9.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="LUK.9.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="LUK.9.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead, </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="LUK.9.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="LUK.9.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">But Herod said, &#8220;I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?&#8221; And he tried to see him.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="LUK.9.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="LUK.9.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida, </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="LUK.9.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="LUK.9.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="LUK.9.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, &#8220;Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="LUK.9.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="LUK.9.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">He replied, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;You give them something to eat.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="LUK.9.13"><span class="content">They answered, &#8220;We have only five loaves of bread and two fish&#8212;unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="LUK.9.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">(About five thousand men were there.)</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="LUK.9.14"><span class="content">But he said to his disciples, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.&#8221;</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="LUK.9.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="LUK.9.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="LUK.9.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="LUK.9.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="LUK.9.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Who do the crowds say I am?&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="LUK.9.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="LUK.9.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">They replied, &#8220;Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="LUK.9.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="LUK.9.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">  </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;But what about you?&#8221;</span></span><span class="content"> he asked. </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Who do you say I am?&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="LUK.9.20"><span class="content">Peter answered, &#8220;God&#8217;s Messiah.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jesus Predicts His Death</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="LUK.9.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="LUK.9.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="LUK.9.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">And he said, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="LUK.9.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="LUK.9.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">Then he said to them all: </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="LUK.9.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="LUK.9.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="LUK.9.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="LUK.9.26"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="LUK.9.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">  </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Transfiguration</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="LUK.9.27"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="LUK.9.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="LUK.9.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. </span></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="LUK.9.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="LUK.9.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">They spoke about his departure,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">9:31 </span><span class="ft">Greek </span><span class="fqa">exodos</span></span></span><span class="content"> which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. </span></span><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="LUK.9.32"><span class="label">32</span><span class="content">Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. </span></span><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="LUK.9.33"><span class="label">33</span><span class="content">As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, &#8220;Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters&#8212;one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.&#8221; (He did not know what he was saying.)</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="LUK.9.33"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="LUK.9.34"><span class="label">34</span><span class="content">While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. </span></span><span class="verse v35" data-usfm="LUK.9.35"><span class="label">35</span><span class="content">A voice came from the cloud, saying, &#8220;This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v36" data-usfm="LUK.9.36"><span class="label">36</span><span class="content">When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.</span></span></div>

Keep yourself pure.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="1TI.5.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="1TI.5.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="1TI.5.23"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="1TI.5.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="1TI.5.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.</span></span></div>
