Reflections on Justice

DAY 10 OF 31

‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.’

These verses speak to the core of justice, which is rooted in compassion, empathy, and fairness. Justice is not merely about laws and punishment; it is about lifting up the oppressed, standing with the marginalised, and advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves.

As followers of Jesus, we are to pursue justice with a fervent desire for what is right and just in the eyes of God. This challenge calls us to actively seek justice for all, fight against inequality and oppression, and strive for a world where righteousness and compassion prevail. We embody his teachings of justice, mercy, and love in all that we do.

Being ‘poor in spirit’ and aware of our need for God’s grace and mercy highlights the importance of approaching justice with a sense of humility and empathy toward others. Additionally, hunger and thirst for righteousness emphasise the desperate pursuit of what is right and just. True justice stems from a sincere heart that seeks to align itself with God’s principles of compassion, mercy, and righteousness.

Challenge: Read Matthew 5:3-12. Consider what the world would be like if we could live out these ideals.

Prayer: Dear God, grant us the wisdom to recognise injustice where it exists, the courage to speak out against oppression and the compassion to stand up for the marginalised. Help us hunger and thirst for righteousness and act justly in all we do.
