Expect the UnexpectedSample
Treat ‘Outsiders’ With Grace
Are you okay when non-believers act like non-believers?
If you regularly spend time with non-believers, be prepared for the unexpected.
We were in one of the world's business capitals. After watching a sports competition, one of the sportspeople invited me to join him and his wife at a party. The party was at the home of the leader of a major company. Previously I was part of two meetings with this CEO. I got on well with him even though he showed no interest in Christ.
The three of us arrived at the party. The couple I came with went off to speak to friends, and I was left standing in front of the CEO. He turned around, saw another couple walking past, and gave the most vulgar introduction I could ever imagine. I knew him well enough to accept this as his brash manner, but it was embarrassing for the other couple as well. It was quite strange, but we chose not to react!
Later in the evening, I found the couple and apologized for the CEO’s remarks. They weren’t concerned, but instead took the opportunity to start a positive conversation with me. They had recently come to faith in Christ and wanted to meet other believers. I was joyfully surprised.
It turned out the man was the global leader of another significant business.
So began a friendship lasting years – all starting with a rude introduction at a party. I walked alongside them as others in their business came to faith. I encouraged their teenage children in their walk with Christ.
I could have reacted strongly and with justification when first introduced at the party. But the CEO wasn't a Christ follower, so why should I expect anything different?
God had His way in the end!
Scripture to ponder:
1 Corinthians 5:12-13a
What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside.
Key Lesson:
If you are with non-believers, expect them to act like non-believers.
