Beauty in Unity

DAY 3 OF 3

Unity is Priceless

The Psalmist describes unity like the dew of Hermon. Jerusalem, built on a mountain, was often dry and arid. To the north of Jerusalem lay Mount Hermon, a cooler place that was snow-capped in winter. The Psalmist in Psalm 133 uses the imagery of dew to describe unity as a natural and priceless gift from God. Unlike oil, which can be manufactured, dew is a natural phenomenon symbolizing unity originating from God. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve lived in unity with each other and God. However, sin, through disobedience, disrupted this unity, causing separation. This shows that when God is present, there is unity. As Paul warns in Galatians, divisions arise when we follow our sinful nature. On the contrary, when we let the Holy Spirit guide us, we bear fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

The dew on Mount Zion had a positive effect. When the wind blew, the dew would drip down the mountain, nourishing plants and wildlife. Similarly, unity yields positive benefits while disunity brings about negative consequences. The disunity between Adam and Eve affected their children, Cain and Abel, leading to tragic consequences. When we strive for unity, we create a positive impact, a ripple effect that can bring about positive changes in various areas of our lives.

Just as the dew brought about growth, unity within the church can make it an oasis in a world filled with struggle and strife. Unity is not just a concept, but a responsibility to make the church a visible testimony of God’s love. Jesus prayed, “May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.”

The psalmist concludes by saying that when God’s people are united, God commands a blessing. So as we look forward to a life forever with God and His people, may we strive for unity today.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me remember the consequences of being disunited. Help me to strive for unity and bring glory to You. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
