 <div class="label">23</div><div class="s1">Josiah Renews the Covenant</div><div class="p"> 1Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 2He went up to the temple of the Lord with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets&#8212;all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord. 3The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord&#8212;to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.</div><div class="p"> 4The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in rank and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the Lord all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron Valley and took the ashes to Bethel. 5He did away with the idolatrous priests appointed by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the towns of Judah and on those around Jerusalem&#8212;those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations and to all the starry hosts. 6He took the Asherah pole from the temple of the Lord to the Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem and burned it there. He ground it to powder and scattered the dust over the graves of the common people. 7He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes that were in the temple of the Lord, the quarters where women did weaving for Asherah.</div><div class="p"> 8Josiah brought all the priests from the towns of Judah and desecrated the high places, from Geba to Beersheba, where the priests had burned incense. He broke down the gateway at the entrance of the Gate of Joshua, the city governor, which was on the left of the city gate. 9Although the priests of the high places did not serve at the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem, they ate unleavened bread with their fellow priests.</div><div class="p"> 10He desecrated Topheth, which was in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, so no one could use it to sacrifice their son or daughter in the fire to Molek. 11He removed from the entrance to the temple of the Lord the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun. They were in the court#23:11 The meaning of the Hebrew for this word is uncertain. near the room of an official named Nathan-Melek. Josiah then burned the chariots dedicated to the sun.</div><div class="p"> 12He pulled down the altars the kings of Judah had erected on the roof near the upper room of Ahaz, and the altars Manasseh had built in the two courts of the temple of the Lord. He removed them from there, smashed them to pieces and threw the rubble into the Kidron Valley. 13The king also desecrated the high places that were east of Jerusalem on the south of the Hill of Corruption&#8212;the ones Solomon king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the vile goddess of the Sidonians, for Chemosh the vile god of Moab, and for Molek the detestable god of the people of Ammon. 14Josiah smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles and covered the sites with human bones.</div><div class="p"> 15Even the altar at Bethel, the high place made by Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin&#8212;even that altar and high place he demolished. He burned the high place and ground it to powder, and burned the Asherah pole also. 16Then Josiah looked around, and when he saw the tombs that were there on the hillside, he had the bones removed from them and burned on the altar to defile it, in accordance with the word of the Lord proclaimed by the man of God who foretold these things.</div><div class="p"> 17The king asked, &#8220;What is that tombstone I see?&#8221;</div><div class="p">The people of the city said, &#8220;It marks the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced against the altar of Bethel the very things you have done to it.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18&#8220;Leave it alone,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Don&#8217;t let anyone disturb his bones.&#8221; So they spared his bones and those of the prophet who had come from Samaria.</div><div class="p"> 19Just as he had done at Bethel, Josiah removed all the shrines at the high places that the kings of Israel had built in the towns of Samaria and that had aroused the Lord&#8217;s anger. 20Josiah slaughtered all the priests of those high places on the altars and burned human bones on them. Then he went back to Jerusalem.</div><div class="p"> 21The king gave this order to all the people: &#8220;Celebrate the Passover to the Lord your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.&#8221; 22Neither in the days of the judges who led Israel nor in the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah had any such Passover been observed. 23But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, this Passover was celebrated to the Lord in Jerusalem.</div><div class="p"> 24Furthermore, Josiah got rid of the mediums and spiritists, the household gods, the idols and all the other detestable things seen in Judah and Jerusalem. This he did to fulfill the requirements of the law written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had discovered in the temple of the Lord. 25Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the Lord as he did&#8212;with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses.</div><div class="p"> 26Nevertheless, the Lord did not turn away from the heat of his fierce anger, which burned against Judah because of all that Manasseh had done to arouse his anger. 27So the Lord said, &#8220;I will remove Judah also from my presence as I removed Israel, and I will reject Jerusalem, the city I chose, and this temple, about which I said, &#8216;My Name shall be there.&#8217;#23:27 1 Kings 8:29&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 28As for the other events of Josiah&#8217;s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?</div><div class="p"> 29While Josiah was king, Pharaoh Necho king of Egypt went up to the Euphrates River to help the king of Assyria. King Josiah marched out to meet him in battle, but Necho faced him and killed him at Megiddo. 30Josiah&#8217;s servants brought his body in a chariot from Megiddo to Jerusalem and buried him in his own tomb. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah and anointed him and made him king in place of his father.</div><div class="s1">Jehoahaz King of Judah</div><div class="p"> 31Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother&#8217;s name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah; she was from Libnah. 32He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, just as his predecessors had done. 33Pharaoh Necho put him in chains at Riblah in the land of Hamath so that he might not reign in Jerusalem, and he imposed on Judah a levy of a hundred talents#23:33 That is, about 3 3/4 tons or about 3.4 metric tons of silver and a talent#23:33 That is, about 75 pounds or about 34 kilograms of gold. 34Pharaoh Necho made Eliakim son of Josiah king in place of his father Josiah and changed Eliakim&#8217;s name to Jehoiakim. But he took Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt, and there he died. 35Jehoiakim paid Pharaoh Necho the silver and gold he demanded. In order to do so, he taxed the land and exacted the silver and gold from the people of the land according to their assessments.</div><div class="s1">Jehoiakim King of Judah</div><div class="p"> 36Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother&#8217;s name was Zebidah daughter of Pedaiah; she was from Rumah. 37And he did evil in the eyes of the Lord, just as his predecessors had done.</div>

 <div class="label">4</div><div class="s1">Get Wisdom at Any Cost</div><div class="q1"> 1Listen, my sons, to a father&#8217;s instruction;</div><div class="q2">pay attention and gain understanding.</div><div class="q1"> 2I give you sound learning,</div><div class="q2">so do not forsake my teaching.</div><div class="q1"> 3For I too was a son to my father,</div><div class="q2">still tender, and cherished by my mother.</div><div class="q1"> 4Then he taught me, and he said to me,</div><div class="q2">&#8220;Take hold of my words with all your heart;</div><div class="q2">keep my commands, and you will live.</div><div class="q1"> 5Get wisdom, get understanding;</div><div class="q2">do not forget my words or turn away from them.</div><div class="q1"> 6Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;</div><div class="q2">love her, and she will watch over you.</div><div class="q1"> 7The beginning of wisdom is this: Get#4:7 Or Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.</div><div class="q2">Though it cost all you have,#4:7 Or wisdom. / Whatever else you get get understanding.</div><div class="q1"> 8Cherish her, and she will exalt you;</div><div class="q2">embrace her, and she will honor you.</div><div class="q1"> 9She will give you a garland to grace your head</div><div class="q2">and present you with a glorious crown.&#8221;</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 10Listen, my son, accept what I say,</div><div class="q2">and the years of your life will be many.</div><div class="q1"> 11I instruct you in the way of wisdom</div><div class="q2">and lead you along straight paths.</div><div class="q1"> 12When you walk, your steps will not be hampered;</div><div class="q2">when you run, you will not stumble.</div><div class="q1"> 13Hold on to instruction, do not let it go;</div><div class="q2">guard it well, for it is your life.</div><div class="q1"> 14Do not set foot on the path of the wicked</div><div class="q2">or walk in the way of evildoers.</div><div class="q1"> 15Avoid it, do not travel on it;</div><div class="q2">turn from it and go on your way.</div><div class="q1"> 16For they cannot rest until they do evil;</div><div class="q2">they are robbed of sleep till they make someone stumble.</div><div class="q1"> 17They eat the bread of wickedness</div><div class="q2">and drink the wine of violence.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 18The path of the righteous is like the morning sun,</div><div class="q2">shining ever brighter till the full light of day.</div><div class="q1"> 19But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness;</div><div class="q2">they do not know what makes them stumble.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 20My son, pay attention to what I say;</div><div class="q2">turn your ear to my words.</div><div class="q1"> 21Do not let them out of your sight,</div><div class="q2">keep them within your heart;</div><div class="q1"> 22for they are life to those who find them</div><div class="q2">and health to one&#8217;s whole body.</div><div class="q1"> 23Above all else, guard your heart,</div><div class="q2">for everything you do flows from it.</div><div class="q1"> 24Keep your mouth free of perversity;</div><div class="q2">keep corrupt talk far from your lips.</div><div class="q1"> 25Let your eyes look straight ahead;</div><div class="q2">fix your gaze directly before you.</div><div class="q1"> 26Give careful thought to the#4:26 Or Make level paths for your feet</div><div class="q2">and be steadfast in all your ways.</div><div class="q1"> 27Do not turn to the right or the left;</div><div class="q2">keep your foot from evil.</div>

 <div class="label">16</div><div class="p"> 1 &#8220;All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. 2They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. 3They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. 4I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, 5but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, &#8216;Where are you going?&#8217; 6Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.</div><div class="p"> 12 &#8220;I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Disciples&#8217; Grief Will Turn to Joy</div><div class="p"> 16Jesus went on to say, &#8220;In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 17At this, some of his disciples said to one another, &#8220;What does he mean by saying, &#8216;In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,&#8217; and &#8216;Because I am going to the Father&#8217;?&#8221; 18They kept asking, &#8220;What does he mean by &#8216;a little while&#8217;? We don&#8217;t understand what he is saying.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 19Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, &#8220;Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, &#8216;In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me&#8217;? 20Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.</div><div class="p"> 25 &#8220;Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 29Then Jesus&#8217; disciples said, &#8220;Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 31 &#8220;Do you now believe?&#8221; Jesus replied. 32&#8220;A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.</div><div class="p"> 33 &#8220;I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.&#8221;</div>
