DAY 18 OF 25

Day 3- Serving in Secret

Discover: In Matthew 6:3-4, Jesus teaches the importance of serving in secret without seeking recognition or praise from others. Serving from a heart posture of humility is what believers are called to do. When we understand that our service is to be done in secret, we better reflect Christ in all that we do and learn to trust Him in all things.

Learn: Jesus instructs that when we are serving those in need, we should not let our left hand know what our right hand is doing. What does this mean? It means our service should be so private that even we hardly notice it. Humility is a crucial factor when we serve; we must avoid being boastful or arrogant or seeking to elevate ourselves, as that is contrary to the calling Jesus has given to every believer. In these verses, there is a promise extended to Christ’s followers that can encourage us in our service. Jesus says that what the Father sees done in secret, He will reward. Though this promise should not be our only motivation for serving in secret, it reminds us that we have a good and loving Father who seeks to bless His children. Colossians 3:23-24 reinforces this principle, reminding believers that our service should be directed toward the Lord, not toward seeking praise or recognition from others. Instead, our posture in serving should be to make Christ known and bring glory and honor to His name alone.

Apply: Serving without seeking the approval of others is something we, as humans, will constantly struggle with. With our sinful nature, we are prone to seek recognition and praise for our accomplishments. It is important to keep our hearts in check and examine the motives behind everything we do. Seeking the Lord in prayer and asking for a humble spirit is vital in our walk with Him. It is easy to grow prideful when we serve, so accountability with God and our peers is very important.

· Why does Jesus emphasize serving in secret without seeking recognition? How does this challenge our natural desire for approval from others?

· How does serving with humility reflect the heart and character of Christ?

· How can remembering that God sees our service, even when it’s done in secret, encourage us to continue serving faithfully?

· What are some practical ways you can serve others privately, without seeking praise or attention?
