Prayers From the Bible Part 2Sample
Unity and protection in God's name
Wow. What a verse! The care of Jesus for His disciples, and the power of God’s name to protect and unify. These words hold profound theological significance. Names evoke images, feelings, memories and, in the case of God, divine authority and protection that emanate from His very essence and character.
Names in the Bible aren’t just identifiers. They encapsulate the nature and attributes of the person. God’s name represents His holy, omnipotent and immutable nature. When Jesus speaks of the power of God’s name, He’s invoking God’s ultimate authority and divine power that can provide protection and unity to His followers.
Jesus asks God to protect His disciples, not through human means but through His divine power. Jesus knows what’s ahead for His disciples and His people in the future; the challenges and persecution they’ll face; the struggle for unity as His followers – including us – will face in a world opposed to His message. By invoking God’s name, Jesus emphasises that true security and preservation come from God’s sovereign power.
The unity Jesus prays for is modelled after the perfect unity between Him and the Father. This unity is spiritual and profound! By being kept in God’s name, the disciples are called to embody this divine unity, reflecting the oneness of the Father and the Son in their relationships and mission. Let’s seek from God the protection and unity that Jesus prayed for.

Follow along with this plan and read the words of people like David, Jonah and even Jesus Himself, as they ask for a variety of things and bring their situations before God. Maybe it will help you pray too!
