 <div class="label">5</div><div class="s1">Preparations for Building the Temple</div><div class="p"> # In Hebrew texts 5:1-18 is numbered 5:15-32. 1When Hiram king of Tyre heard that Solomon had been anointed king to succeed his father David, he sent his envoys to Solomon, because he had always been on friendly terms with David. 2Solomon sent back this message to Hiram:</div><div class="pm"> 3&#8220;You know that because of the wars waged against my father David from all sides, he could not build a temple for the Name of the Lord his God until the Lord put his enemies under his feet. 4But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side, and there is no adversary or disaster. 5I intend, therefore, to build a temple for the Name of the Lord my God, as the Lord told my father David, when he said, &#8216;Your son whom I will put on the throne in your place will build the temple for my Name.&#8217;</div><div class="pm"> 6&#8220;So give orders that cedars of Lebanon be cut for me. My men will work with yours, and I will pay you for your men whatever wages you set. You know that we have no one so skilled in felling timber as the Sidonians.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7When Hiram heard Solomon&#8217;s message, he was greatly pleased and said, &#8220;Praise be to the Lord today, for he has given David a wise son to rule over this great nation.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8So Hiram sent word to Solomon:</div><div class="pm">&#8220;I have received the message you sent me and will do all you want in providing the cedar and juniper logs. 9My men will haul them down from Lebanon to the Mediterranean Sea, and I will float them as rafts by sea to the place you specify. There I will separate them and you can take them away. And you are to grant my wish by providing food for my royal household.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10In this way Hiram kept Solomon supplied with all the cedar and juniper logs he wanted, 11and Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand cors#5:11 That is, probably about 3,600 tons or about 3,250 metric tons of wheat as food for his household, in addition to twenty thousand baths#5:11 Septuagint (see also 2 Chron. 2:10); Hebrew twenty cors#5:11 That is, about 120,000 gallons or about 440,000 liters of pressed olive oil. Solomon continued to do this for Hiram year after year. 12The Lord gave Solomon wisdom, just as he had promised him. There were peaceful relations between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty.</div><div class="p"> 13King Solomon conscripted laborers from all Israel&#8212;thirty thousand men. 14He sent them off to Lebanon in shifts of ten thousand a month, so that they spent one month in Lebanon and two months at home. Adoniram was in charge of the forced labor. 15Solomon had seventy thousand carriers and eighty thousand stonecutters in the hills, 16as well as thirty-three hundred#5:16 Hebrew; some Septuagint manuscripts (see also 2 Chron. 2:2,18) thirty-six hundred foremen who supervised the project and directed the workers. 17At the king&#8217;s command they removed from the quarry large blocks of high-grade stone to provide a foundation of dressed stone for the temple. 18The craftsmen of Solomon and Hiram and workers from Byblos cut and prepared the timber and stone for the building of the temple.</div>

 <div class="label">34</div><div class="s1">The Lord Will Be Israel&#8217;s Shepherd</div><div class="p"> 1The word of the Lord came to me: 2&#8220;Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to you shepherds of Israel who only take care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock? 3You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock. 4You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally. 5So they were scattered because there was no shepherd, and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild animals. 6My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. They were scattered over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them.</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 8As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered and has become food for all the wild animals, and because my shepherds did not search for my flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock, 9therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against the shepherds and will hold them accountable for my flock. I will remove them from tending the flock so that the shepherds can no longer feed themselves. I will rescue my flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.</div><div class="p"> 11&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. 12As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness. 13I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land. 14I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord. 16I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;As for you, my flock, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will judge between one sheep and another, and between rams and goats. 18Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also trample the rest of your pasture with your feet? Is it not enough for you to drink clear water? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet? 19Must my flock feed on what you have trampled and drink what you have muddied with your feet?</div><div class="p"> 20&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says to them: See, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21Because you shove with flank and shoulder, butting all the weak sheep with your horns until you have driven them away, 22I will save my flock, and they will no longer be plundered. I will judge between one sheep and another. 23I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd. 24I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the Lord have spoken.</div><div class="p"> 25&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;I will make a covenant of peace with them and rid the land of savage beasts so that they may live in the wilderness and sleep in the forests in safety. 26I will make them and the places surrounding my hill a blessing.#34:26 Or I will cause them and the places surrounding my hill to be named in blessings (see Gen. 48:20); or I will cause them and the places surrounding my hill to be seen as blessed I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing. 27The trees will yield their fruit and the ground will yield its crops; the people will be secure in their land. They will know that I am the Lord, when I break the bars of their yoke and rescue them from the hands of those who enslaved them. 28They will no longer be plundered by the nations, nor will wild animals devour them. They will live in safety, and no one will make them afraid. 29I will provide for them a land renowned for its crops, and they will no longer be victims of famine in the land or bear the scorn of the nations. 30Then they will know that I, the Lord their God, am with them and that they, the Israelites, are my people, declares the Sovereign Lord. 31You are my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, declares the Sovereign Lord.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">8</div><div class="s1">Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand</div><div class="p"> 1During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2&#8220;I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4His disciples answered, &#8220;But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5 &#8220;How many loaves do you have?&#8221; Jesus asked.</div><div class="p">&#8220;Seven,&#8221; they replied.</div><div class="p"> 6He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. 7They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. 8The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 9About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away, 10he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.</div><div class="p"> 11The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. 12He sighed deeply and said, &#8220;Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.&#8221; 13Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.</div><div class="s1">The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod</div><div class="p"> 14The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15&#8220;Be careful,&#8221; Jesus warned them. &#8220;Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 16They discussed this with one another and said, &#8220;It is because we have no bread.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 17Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: &#8220;Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don&#8217;t you remember? 19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Twelve,&#8221; they replied.</div><div class="p"> 20 &#8220;And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?&#8221;</div><div class="p">They answered, &#8220;Seven.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 21He said to them, &#8220;Do you still not understand?&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida</div><div class="p"> 22They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. 23He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man&#8217;s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, &#8220;Do you see anything?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 24He looked up and said, &#8220;I see people; they look like trees walking around.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 25Once more Jesus put his hands on the man&#8217;s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26Jesus sent him home, saying, &#8220;Don&#8217;t even go into#8:26 Some manuscripts go and tell anyone in the village.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah</div><div class="p"> 27Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, &#8220;Who do people say I am?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 28They replied, &#8220;Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 29 &#8220;But what about you?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;Who do you say I am?&#8221;</div><div class="p">Peter answered, &#8220;You are the Messiah.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 30Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Predicts His Death</div><div class="p"> 31He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.</div><div class="p"> 33But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. &#8220;Get behind me, Satan!&#8221; he said. &#8220;You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Way of the Cross</div><div class="p"> 34Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: &#8220;Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35For whoever wants to save their life#8:35 The Greek word means either life or soul; also in verses 36 and 37. will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father&#8217;s glory with the holy angels.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">6</div><div class="p"> 1As God&#8217;s co-workers we urge you not to receive God&#8217;s grace in vain. 2For he says,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;In the time of my favor I heard you,</div><div class="q2">and in the day of salvation I helped you.&#8221;#6:2 Isaiah 49:8</div><div class="m">I tell you, now is the time of God&#8217;s favor, now is the day of salvation.</div><div class="s1">Paul&#8217;s Hardships</div><div class="p"> 3We put no stumbling block in anyone&#8217;s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. 4Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; 5in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; 6in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; 7in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; 8through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; 9known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; 10sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.</div><div class="p"> 11We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you. 12We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. 13As a fair exchange&#8212;I speak as to my children&#8212;open wide your hearts also.</div><div class="s1">Warning Against Idolatry</div><div class="p"> 14Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15What harmony is there between Christ and Belial#6:15 Greek Beliar, a variant of Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;I will live with them</div><div class="q2">and walk among them,</div><div class="q1">and I will be their God,</div><div class="q2">and they will be my people.&#8221;#6:16 Lev. 26:12; Jer. 32:38; Ezek. 37:27</div><div class="m"> 17Therefore,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Come out from them</div><div class="q2">and be separate,</div><div class="q4">says the Lord.</div><div class="q1">Touch no unclean thing,</div><div class="q2">and I will receive you.&#8221;#6:17 Isaiah 52:11; Ezek. 20:34,41</div><div class="m"> 18And,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;I will be a Father to you,</div><div class="q2">and you will be my sons and daughters,</div><div class="q4">says the Lord Almighty.&#8221;#6:18 2 Samuel 7:14; 7:8</div>
