The Roles of the Holy Spirit: A Study for TeensSample
Comforter, Counselor, and Helper
Scripture: Isaiah 11:2; John 14:16
I need help, wisdom, and understanding. I’m facing so many big decisions, challenges, and trials. I think we’ve all had thoughts like these before, and one of the most amazing things about the Holy Spirit is that He doesn’t just leave us to fend for ourselves.
Today, we will look at how the Holy Spirit offers wisdom, counsel, and help. Isaiah 11:2 (NIV) tells us, “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord.”
Let’s look at these attributes. The Spirit of wisdom and understanding. Don’t we all need wisdom and understanding? I picture the typical sports movie trope where the star athlete struggles, and then the school janitor, who’s been around the sport their whole life, offers wisdom that changes the athlete’s life. And then they win the big game! But seriously, we need a person to turn to who can give us heavenly wisdom: the Holy Spirit.
It also says He’s the Spirit of counsel. Sometimes, we just need to be pointed in the right direction. I remember when I was in college; I sat down with a counselor to help me set up the best course of action to earn my degree. Not only was I pointed in a better direction than I was going, but I also learned how I could take just two extra classes and receive a double major. The Holy Spirit is our Counselor. He doesn’t just point us the right way; He also gives us better direction than we could ever give ourselves.
And even though it can sound similar to these first two attributes, the Holy Spirit is also our Helper. John 14:16–17(NIV) says, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.” We can often feel like we do this thing called life alone, but we don’t. We have a helper in the Holy Spirit. He’s always with us and dwells in us. We’ve seen a lot about Him these last few days, and we must understand we’re not alone. He’s with us, helping us along the way.
Pray
Lord God, thank You so much for sending me a helper in the Holy Spirit. Help me to always turn to the Spirit of wisdom and counsel as I go through life. Let the Holy Spirit be my source of all wisdom. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
