Godly Masculinity - Wisdom for Young Men

DAY 5 OF 6

Introduction

Closely related to spiritual mediocrity is living a life where studying the Word of God and prayer is not a priority. This talks to the misconception that I must only pray when it is necessary and that studying the Word of God is optional.

Don't stop praying and reading the bible

This is our lifeline, and somehow our enemy convinces us that this is not necessary. By not knowing the Word of God, you will not be knowledgeable of what is good and acceptable to God. Without praying, you cannot grow spiritually.

In Hos. 4:6 we read that God says: "My people are being destroyed because they don’t know me."

In 2 Tim. 3:16 we can see what the purpose is of the Bible:

  • It is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.
  • It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

In Heb. 4:12 we also read it exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

We get to know God through His Word and we get to know His will and how to live a fruitful life.

In 1 Thess. 5:16-18 we are encouraged to never stop praying. This is the will of God.

In Phil. 4:6 God also invites us to come and pray about everything. There is nothing that we cannot bring to God in prayer. This is also a sure antidote for depression and anxiety.

So, cultivate a habit of studying the Word of God and never stop praying.

What does it mean?

  • We can also just go through the motions by reading the Bible. However, we can read the Bible with intent, with a hunger to gain insight and to understand. So, when you read the Bible, read it from a perspective of getting a deep insight into the meaning and try to understand.
  • When reading the Bible also change the way you think. Ask yourself the following question: what is this piece of scripture trying to tell me? Avoid thinking of other people while studying the Bible.
  • Prayer is a simple conversation with God. In Phil 4:6 God invites us to pray about everything. And that means everything. Tell God about everything on your heart, the things you worry about, the things you do not understand. God is OK with it but also remember to thank Him for all He has done.
