Sonship

There's a great scene in the movie Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe. Robin Longstride finds himself in the company of the keeper of the house where he is staying. One night, the old man summons Robin to his room and begins to tell Robin about his father. "Your father was a great man and you are your fathers' son. Are you ready to become who you are?"

Are you ready to become who you are?

The primary place that we are assaulted in our lives as men is in the area of sonship. If we can recover sonship, we can be unstoppable. Remember, Jesus came to seek and save what was lost. He seeks to restore what has been lost and taken from us as a result of the brutal attacks of our enemy. At the center of His restoration work is restoring us to sonship with our Father.

There will come a day when you realize and probably already have, that your dad isn’t strong enough. That he, regardless of how hard he tries, will leave wounds on your heart. Men are fallible and we make mistakes. It is by God’s grace that He covers our mistakes as fathers and those of our fathers. Our fathers and we are not capable of getting it perfectly right in the role of father. That is why the restoration work of Jesus is so liberating to the reality of fatherlessness.

Our fatherlessness began as a result of the fall of our first father, Adam. When Adam chose Eve over God, the perfect intimacy and relationship between Adam and God got severed. We all live with Adam’s decision in our relationship with our father and our relationships with our sons.

The great news is that God our Father orchestrates life to raise fatherlessness in our hearts to heal that wound. He wants desperately to restore you as a son and to offer His fathering.

Invite God to father you. Give Him complete authority to bring to your mind and heart areas that you feel fatherless. Be prepared! He will accept the invitation and you will be in awe of how He will sweep in to father you in His perfect restoration and love.
