DAY 8 OF 25

Have you ever had a friend or loved one be on the receiving end of words like Paul described here? Words soaked in anger, rage, malice, slander, and filth? If you’ve ever heard someone speak to or about someone you care about this way, then you likely responded in a way that showed your loved one that those words were wrong. Why? Because you love that person! You want them to not only know they’re loved by you, but that the words spoken to or about them don’t hold weight. After all, you would never speak to someone you care about that way.

Well, if that’s true for those you love, why wouldn’t it be true for you too? Why would you speak to yourself in a way you wouldn’t want anyone to speak about someone you love? It’s important not just to recognize your view of yourself, but to let the truth of God’s Word shift it when you do. That’s the challenge: change your thinking, speaking, and view of yourself in light of who God says you are!

As you catch your self-talk this week, run it through this filter. Ask yourself, “Would I speak to a friend like this? Would I let them speak to themselves this way?” If no, then take the cue and change course. Speak to yourself out of love and kindness the way you’d speak to anyone you love.

About this Plan

Rooted

Like a plant, our root system—our identity—is vitally important to our health. It’s how you see yourself in light of God, others, and the world. It’s what holds you when life changes, threatens, or causes you to question what’s true about you! We’ll look at how a healthy identity rooted in who God is will keep us strong, vibrant, and grounded no matter what comes our way.
