Not the Solution

DAY 5 OF 6

What are the steps forward for someone struggling with thoughts of self-harm and suicide?

1. Pre-decide

The power of the pre-decision is not something that can be overstated. If we allow our emotions to dictate our actions, there is a high likelihood that we will make the wrong decision in a moment of feeling overwhelmed. Make the decision that you will not hurt yourself while you still have the capacity to do so and eliminate suicide as an option.

2. Know yourself and seek self-improvement

One of the leadership traits that I learned in the Marine Corps was to “Know yourself and seek self-improvement.” Most of us know where we are weak and where we need to grow. Don’t put yourself in a bad position and your chances of making a bad decision decline dramatically.

3. Get good counsel

Find a qualified counselor that can speak truth into your life and provide the perspective needed to align to God’s purpose. It is possible to know where you need to grow or what you need to stay away from but not know how. A qualified counselor can provide the direction that you need.

4. Speak to a Doctor

It is possible that you are feeling the way you are because of something physical. Seek qualified medical attention to determine if there is a physical issue that needs to be addressed.

5. Think on the right things

Just as in a physical diet, what you consume emotionally and spiritually will either build you up or tear you down. Perhaps the most important thing you can do to change the way you feel is to change the way you think. How do you change the way you think? Feed your mind with only those things that are good and stay away from the “junk food” of negativity being peddled by a broken culture.

6. Observe the 4 “B’s”

There are four things you need to consistently do if you want to move beyond feelings of self-harm and destruction:

a. Be in the Word - Spend time every day in the Bible

b. Be in Prayer - Talk to God every day

c. Be in Fellowship - Find a church family that teaches the Bible faithfully and allows you to serve and be served.

d. Be in contact with those in your life who you can reach out to when you are struggling.
