Focus: Avoiding DistractionsSample
In the whirlwind of our daily routines, it’s easy to become entangled in your schedule, the media you consume, and even your conversations often pull your attention towards the immediate, the tangible, and the temporal.
Focus on the Kingdom
To "set your mind on things above" is to consciously direct our thoughts and aspirations toward the kingdom of heaven. It’s about prioritizing spiritual growth and values over worldly desires and pressures. This doesn’t mean neglecting our responsibilities or the world around us; rather, it involves viewing our lives through the lens of eternity. How does this job, relationship, or conversation fit into God’s plan? Are my daily actions aligned with my faith?
Renewing Your Mind
This call to focus on the heavenly is also a call to renewal. Romans 12:2 urges you to not conform to the pattern of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of your mind. When you bury your thoughts in the things of God—through prayer, Scripture reading, and fellowship with other believers—you begin to see a transformation in your attitude and actions.
Practical Steps
Start with Scripture: Each day, before the rush begins, spend time in God’s Word. Let Scripture be the first influence on your thoughts each morning.
Pray Continually: Keep an ongoing conversation with God throughout your day. It can change your perspective one moment at a time.
Surround Yourself with Faith: Engage with communities and relationships that encourage spiritual growth. The faith of others should uplift and motivate you.
Think It Over
Today, take a moment to assess where your focus lies. Are you overwhelmed by the pressures and pleasures of this world? Consider what adjustments you might need to make to set your mind on the things above. Remember, what you focus on fills your mind and directs your life.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
In a world that often overwhelms me with its demands and distractions, I seek your peace, Lord. I recognize how easy it is to get caught up in the temporary—to focus on what is right in front of me.
Help me set my mind on things above, not on earthly things. Grant me the wisdom to discern what is of true value. Help me to cherish my time in Your Word and prayer, letting these disciplines reshape my priorities and transform my mind.
May my life reflect the peace and joy that focusing on You brings. In the name of Jesus, amen.

About this Plan
We often don’t recognize distractions for what they are until they’ve done their damage. Distractions, by their nature, don't announce themselves with a warning. They sneak into our daily routines, masquerading as necessary tasks, engaging diversions, or even essential activities. It’s only after they’ve diverted us from our goals and stolen our time that we realize their true impact.
