I am still waiting for an automobile maker to offer a full warranty—one that covers anything that could go wrong with a car, bumper-to-bumper, for as long as you own the car—without limitations! I suspect I will be waiting a long time for that kind of warranty. If there were such, it might illustrate a biblical teaching we find in the book of Hebrews, chapter 10. The writer describes the New Covenant God has put in place for our benefit. He says God canceled the first covenant—the one He made with His people at Mt. Sinai. He canceled it because it did not work. The people were unable to keep their part of its requirements. Under the old covenant, the priest offered the same sacrifices repeatedly, yet the sacrifices never took take away sins or the people’s guilt. Then the writer describes the New Covenant that Jesus Christ initiated. He says when Christ our High Priest died, offering Himself to God, His single sacrifice was sufficient for all time. Once offered, Christ sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. By one offering, He forever made perfect those who are being made holy. God then adds, “I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds.” God accepts the death of His Son as full payment for all our sin—a payment that goes into effect when we place our faith in Jesus Christ. And it lasts forever. It is a warranty too good for anyone to pass up.
