According to an AARP study, more than $40 trillion dollars will pass from one generation to another over the next 60 years. But the people who will get most of this money will be families who are already well-off. The rich will get richer. But even they have be thrifty because health care costs and longevity can erode what they think they have. When Jacob was about to die, he spoke not of a legacy of money, but of faith. In Genesis 48, we read this: “After he adopted Joseph’s two sons to replace his own erring firstborn, Jacob blessed Joseph this way, ‘May the God before whom my grandfather Abraham and my father Isaac walked-the God who has been my shepherd all my life, to this very day, the Angel who has redeemed me from all harm—may he bless these boys. May they preserve my name and the names of Abraham and Isaac.'” Jacob remembered the faith that his ancestors passed on to him. He saw how they trusted God and God preserved them and him. So he prays that his grandchildren, Ephraim and Manasseh, would keep faith in God, and pass it on to their children. Thank God if you receive a material inheritance, but an inheritance of faith in Christ is far greater than material wealth—both to receive and to pass on to your children.
