Maltbie Babcock wrote the classic hymn, "This Is My Father's World." He was inspired to write it as he reflected on creation—God's awesome power and wisdom in creating rocks, trees, birds, the sky and sea. One verse I like is this: "This is my Father's world. O let me ne’er forget, That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet." How true that is, and it is what the psalmist sought to convey as he penned Psalm 33. He said praise to God is fitting and appropriate for various reasons. One reason is that everything God created is good, orderly, and dependable. We count on the earth's rotation every 24 hours, on the sunrise in the east, on the arrival of spring, summer, winter, and fall. What God does is good, orderly, and dependable. God is also righteous—His character conforms to His perfect moral standard, and He wants us to be just and righteous as He is. Right now, God's creation stands alienated from Him; it groans in pain, waiting for the day when God sets it free from death and decay. Until then, God calls on His children to be His agents in the world, to preserve the creation, to speak to the culture without becoming absorbed into it, to uphold His values of justice and righteousness, to proclaim His offer of love, forgiveness, and reconciliation through Jesus Christ. We do all this because, yes, this is our Father's world.
