The Gospel of Mark

DAY 27 OF 112

Often the passage of Jesus calming the storm is read a bit like a parable, too. We talk of Jesus stilling the storms of our lives as he stilled the wind and waves. This is certainly a beautiful analogy, but what if we were to read it as Jesus modelling how we can respond in life’s storms?

We should definitely rely on Jesus' salvation to still the storm, but notice Jesus’ response: “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” Jesus clearly wanted the disciples to show some initiative, authority, and faith in the midst of the storm, otherwise why would he rebuke them? So if we see Jesus as a model example of how to handle storms, we notice two things: first, he was at peace. Second, he had complete authority.

Lord Jesus, teach us to follow your example of peace and authority so that whatever comes our way in life, we can respond in the way you have shown us, Amen.
