Abiding in HimSample
The Word of God plays a vital role in our abiding in Jesus. By the Word of God, I mean the Holy Scriptures. Our fathers have this mantra called "Sola scriptura". As believers, we have been called to live by the Scriptures alone. We do not have any means by which to abide in Christ apart from the Scriptures. Imagine for a moment that your lover is thousands of miles away from you and you do not have any means by which you can see them, text them, or talk to them. All you have are letters from your lover. The only way to stay in fellowship then is to stay closely knitted to your lover's letters written to you. To forfeit those letters is to lose sight of the one you love. Such is the Holy Scriptures; we do not know God apart from His words to us. To forfeit the Scriptures is to forfeit an opportunity to know and abide in the will and love of Christ.
Moreso, the Holy Scriptures are God's purging tools. The Word corrects us, teaches us, and instructs us. How else shall we grow and live as Christians without the Scriptures. It furnishes our hearts for good works and endears us to the breast of the Master. Every time spent in God's word is an opportunity to grow and be fruitful, most importantly, it's an opportunity to abide in the Lord.
The enemy throughout past centuries has fought so hard to hinder the spread of the Scriptures. Some have become martyrs in order to see that the Scriptures are preserved and sent to all men. Some have labored tirelessly, pouring their entire lives into the labor of seeing that the Scriptures are well interpreted, and the knowledge of God therein made bare. While we must appreciate such labors, we must also make it count by faithfully reading, studying, and meditating on the Word. For what shall it profit us if we neglect such great knowledge in the name of busyness. For every time we neglect the scripture, we jettison our abiding in Christ. For to abide in Christ is to abide in His Word.
It is good to know that a solid and fruitful prayer life is an offspring of constantly abiding in the Word. Our prayers are a vocalization of our abiding in His Word. Praying without abiding in His Word is mere uttering of words. True prayer is the voice of the abundance of the Word in us.
