Peace for Christian Perfectionists by Faith ChangSample

When considering decisions about the future, we Christian perfectionists often see our choices as a kind of trigger for a Rube Goldberg machine. You may have seen such a contraption before. Maybe a marble rolls down a ramp into a line of dominos which trigger an alarm that releases a swinging bowling ball, and so on, until—surprise!—a cup of lemonade is served or a piece of toast pops up and is slathered with jam.

For the Christian perfectionist, though, instead of a cup of lemonade or a delightful piece of toast, we often imagine our actions leading to a cascade of destruction and harm. We’re filled with anxiety as we wonder, “What if…?”

Yet there is a power at work in the world much greater than me and my choices. God is working, and the weary Christian perfectionist can rest in the knowledge of his gracious providence.

The apostle Paul writes that God chose us in Christ “before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4), and that he did this “according to the purpose of his will” and “to the praise of his glorious grace” (v 5-6). Even before he made the world, God was thinking of you and determined to save you in Christ.

When standing at a point of decision, take comfort in knowing that you did not orchestrate your birthplace or birthdate, the Christians you’d encounter, or the way you’d hear the gospel. God did. Before you knew him, he chose you. Before you knew to seek him, he sought you. Your salvation is founded upon his gracious providence. And if he was able to accomplish his will in your life even when you weren’t looking for him, how much more can you trust him to guide you as you seek to obey him now?

Sovereign Lord,

You keep watch over my coming and going. Keep me close to you now. Grant me clarity to see the choices before me with discerning eyes. Give me Godly wisdom to know the way of faith and love. Fill me with courage amid uncertainty and trust in your shepherd’s heart. You have led me this far. You are not going to leave me behind now.

In all that is left undone, may your grace be sufficient.
