Serving God Without Insecurities

DAY 1 OF 3

The False Security of Approval

I struggled with insecurity for a long time as a pastor.

What does that mean? It's that ambiguous feeling of not measuring up, of feeling out of place, of needing to prove one's legitimacy. Insecurity breeds negative emotions such as stress or anxiety, as well as behaviors like overworking to try to prove one's worth, controlling others, or reacting defensively to even the slightest criticism.

Have you ever found yourself in this situation? When you think about it, speaking on behalf of God to tens, hundreds, or thousands of people and being held accountable for their spiritual lives before God is an intimidating prospect! When we are insecure, the first thing we seek is security. Where to find it?

The False Security of Approval

"Great Pastor! That was a good message!"... "Pastor, we love you, thank you for your ministry!"...

Applause or "AMENs" after a good sentence...

These reactions can become a false security. Indeed, they only provide temporary encouragement. The trap, when relying on people's approval, is that it fluctuates over time and depends on our actions. Whether it's because of our mistakes, ingratitude towards our work, or the fact that the assembly does not appreciate what the Spirit is doing, those who valued us before may appreciate us less. One can then face a dilemma: obey God or seek to please people?

When seeking the appreciation of men to feel secure, one falls into the trap of the fear of man. It's no longer about ministry but politics. You seek to please the crowd, like a politician whose opinions are dictated by poll results.

You are a man or woman of God. This implies saying things that do not please the flesh of your listeners, having standards different from those of the world, living against the current of society's culture. Appreciation cannot be the source of your security.

I invite you to pray with me: Lord, I ask for forgiveness for placing my security in the approval of men. I renounce the fear of man; be my security. Give me the courage to obey you and proclaim your word faithfully. In the name of Jesus, amen.
