A Very Special Child, Isaiah's Prophecy About the Lord JesusSample
A special name for a special Child (2)
“And His name shall be called… Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6)
The Child that will be born is not just a “Wonderful Counselor," He also is the “Mighty God," Isaiah writes.
It was not uncommon in ancient Jewish society to give children names with a religious meaning like "God saves" or "God is my strength." This did not necessarily mean that these children had a special role as God’s servants, but their names were a reminder of God’s goodness and promises. These names expressed the hope and faith of the parents.
However, the name of this particular Child is different. It really applies to Himself. People rightly call Him “Mighty God."
In the next chapter (10:21) Isaiah speaks about “the mighty God” as “the LORD, the Holy One of Israel." So once again, he equates the announced Child with God Himself.
Since Isaiah’s contemporaries were oppressed by enemies, it was comforting for them to know that the promised Savior would be powerful. He would be able to deliver them. But the same is true for us nowadays. We need a “mighty savior” since we are too weak to save ourselves. The chains of sin and death that hold us, can only be broken by God.
When this Child was born, Zephaniah’s prophecy came true: “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save." Praise God for His love and strength!
About this Plan
The Bible tells a lot about the Lord Jesus. There are four Bible books devoted to His life, and later letters often describe Him as well. But even before the Lord Jesus was born, prophets wrote about Him. This reading plan is about a prophecy by Isaiah that tells us how special Jesus is.
