Faith & Love: A One Year Bible Reading Plan - Part 12Sample
Our READING for today comes from Revelation 6:16-17
'… calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, (17) for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”'
What we see in Revelation 6 is Christ Himself bringing closure to that season in history in which the nation of Israel, by and large, chose against embracing Him. John’s Gospel points out what history confirms: He came to His own people, but they did not embrace Him for who He was – the Lamb of God who had come to take away the sin of the world (John 1:11; John 1:29).
The final verses of this chapter (Rev 6:16-17) reflect the experience of Israel’s religious leaders who had rejected the mercy side of God’s love revealed in Christ the Lamb of God who came to take away the sin of the WORLD. Those religious leaders were happy to use the Roman justice system and its military might against the carpenter of Nazareth. As well as His followers who had accepted Him as the Son of God. But it seems just as they chose the Romans as their instruments of ‘justice’ on this rebel Rabbi, God allows their instrument of choice to bring an end to their own reign of religious power.
Choices have consequences. Rejecting God’s grace in Christ will not endear us to the Father. Accepting the grace of God that Jesus makes available to us is the best choice we could ever make. And the consequence of that choice is LIFE ...
John 3:36a (AMPC): "… he who believes in (has faith in, clings to, relies on) the Son has (now possesses) eternal life."
