A City without Walls
When I was younger I remember reading my Bible early in the morning while on a missions trip, when I came across Proverbs 25:28. The only other person in the room was the team leader, who also happened to be a very good friend. So I asked him what it meant to be “a city without walls.” He replied, “It means you can be easily conquered.”
A high wall in biblical times was a city’s greatest defense; without it, the city was vulnerable to attack. Lack of self-control also leaves us vulnerable to serious attacks from the Enemy. In one hour of rioting a city can lose its economy; in one hour of indiscipline, everything you have worked for in the Lord can be lost—your purity, your victorious streak, your joy, your peace, your reputation. Let’s build the walls higher! I’d sooner have an overambitious wall and be seen as “paranoid” than trust in my old garden fence. Never be ashamed to have accountability software on your devices, to always have your door open, to share your phone with your spouse, and to never trust yourself alone with someone you are attracted to. Some probably said the Great Wall of China was excessive when it was built, but it still stands today.
