Promises: Maker of Heaven and Earth
Until 70 AD, when the temple was destroyed, practicing Jews would travel to Jerusalem to celebrate feasts and worship. During their travels, they would sing songs together. These “Psalms of Ascent” are found in Psalms 120-134. Today’s song reminds us that our great God is the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 121
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
The world is an uncertain place. Rogue nations continue to develop nuclear arms. Muslim extremists behead hostages and take over parts of the Middle East. Another virus breaks out and starts to show up around the world. Breaking news interrupts regularly scheduled programming to show viewers live footage of the damage caused by another natural disaster.
And then it gets closer to home. Circumstances change in our lives from day to day. MRIs, tests, treatments, and surgeries interrupt this week’s schedule. Jobs are at risk of going away. Marriages are hanging together with one last thin thread of commitment. As you look to the mountainous challenges ahead, the words of the psalmist hit home, “Where does my help come from?”
The answer: The Lord! The Maker of heaven and earth! The unchanging God watches over you. He never sleeps, protecting you day and night. He leaves with you in the morning and comes home with you at night. He continually watches over you. God is our only certainty! Cling to him! He will hold you with his unwavering hand in your shaken world.
Father, help us hold on to you and never let go. Thank you for never letting go of us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
