21 Days in the Book of John

DAY 16 OF 21

In this chapter, Jesus is explaining to His disciples that He must leave. He uses the word “lupe” (sorrow or grief) four times to describe the physical and emotional pain they are feeling, even though those emotions are not outwardly shown.

Here are a few things I’d like to point out about Chapter 16:

  1. Jesus is leaving for a specific purpose and tells the disciples it is so He can send them the Comforter, who we now know is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has two ministries in this world. The first is to convict the unbeliever and the second is to illuminate Scripture for the believer.
  2. Jesus earlier described Himself as the way, the truth, and the life. He now explains how the Holy Spirit will guide them to that truth. He also tells how the Holy Spirit will show all things to come. In past generations, God used prophets to speak to man, but now He has a new way!
  3. The disciples are puzzled over Jesus’ words as they do not understand what is about to happen. They are asking among themselves when what they should have done was ask Jesus directly. Jesus assures them that their sorrow would turn to joy, they would receive power in prayer, and they would obtain a victorious peace, one the world cannot give.

About this Plan

21 Days in the Book of John

John sets the foundation for understanding the Trinity and shows how Jesus is God. The purpose of John’s message was made abundantly clear when he wrote, “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.” Join me as we read one chapter a day and learn about the deity of Jesus Christ!
