Daily Bible Reading – September 2023, God’s Saving Word: WisdomSample

September 2
Introduction
In today’s reading, Jesus continues to interpret Scripture, and he offers six examples of life in community that portray God’s realm. He teaches about anger, adultery, divorce, vows, revenge, and love for enemies.
Scripture Reading
Matthew 5:21-48
Today’s Key Verse: Matthew 5:44, 45a
[Jesus said:] “But now I tell you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may become the children of your Father in heaven.”
Reflect
Note the number of times Jesus says, “But now I tell you …” How do Jesus’s teachings shed new light on Scripture? Which of these teachings do you find most challenging? Why? Are these teachings relevant for today? Why or why not?
Pray
Lord God, you know that at times it is hard for us to put aside anger and how easy it is to seek revenge. Teach me to strive for peace and reconciliation, to live according to your will, and to pray for those with whom I may be at odds. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Matthew 6:1-15: Jesus teaches about charity and prayer.
