What Was Jesus' Mission on Earth?

DAY 4 OF 13

Jesus came to destroy demons

“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” (Luke 4:34)

At the beginning of Jesus' public ministry, His identity is still unclear to most bystanders. But not to spiritual powers! This becomes clear when Jesus addresses a man possessed by demons. The demons know who Jesus is: the Holy One of God. And they tremble with fear because they suspect Jesus will destroy them.

The demons are right. Jesus only has to speak and they have no choice but to leave the people they possessed. All spiritual powers must bow to Jesus' authority. The decisive blow He dealt them on the cross. By dying, Jesus “disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them” (Colossians 2:15). Since then, Satan and his servants still have a little influence that God allows them, but in the end they will be permanently destroyed.

Jesus has come to face and defeat His enemy. God had already promised this to Adam and Eve immediately after they committed their first sin. Jesus fulfilled this promise about 2000 years ago.

Can spiritual powers still play a role in people's lives today? In that light, what is the significance of Jesus' victory?

About this Plan

What Was Jesus' Mission on Earth?

Jesus Christ came to earth for a purpose. His coming was a conscious decision. During the years in which He traveled around the land of Israel and made God's Kingdom known, He also explained why He came to earth. Several times, we read in the Gospels: “I have come to...”. This reading plan aims to trace some of those statements to make us aware of Jesus’ mission.
