Big Idea:

Psalm 57 is David’s heartfelt prayer to God while on the run from his enemy, King Saul. To elude being captured by Saul, David retreated to multiple cities, and after realizing that he was not safe in any city, David then fled to a cave in Adullum (1 Samuel 22). Although David had every reason to be afraid as he fled from city to city, as long as he kept his eyes fixed on the victorious God who was in control instead of the problems he was experiencing, David’s fears were kept at bay. Therefore, David focused on the attributes of God. He opens this verse with a request for God to show him grace by calling out to God for safety amid trouble. The word “mercy” in this verse comes from the Hebrew word hanan, meaning to show favor, be gracious, or show mercy upon. Therefore, David recognizes that his request is unmerited and underserved.

He then uses the example of a bird spreading its wings over its young to reveal how God shields those He loves from their enemies. The ability to praise God amidst difficulties, confident that He will hide you, comes from the assurance of knowing God and His word. You must regard life’s circumstances as David did because fear of life’s situations indicates a lack of faith in the God who has promised to hide and keep you safe from the enemies that pursue you according to His word. David said he would take refuge in God “until the danger passes by.” This means that David understood that true safety from Saul was found not in a cave but in the Lord, and that is the same truth that you can stand on today. It does not matter if you are experiencing the burden of illness, the hardship of finances, the decline of your marriage, difficulties in relationships, or whatever you may be up against; safety is found in the Lord.

Reflection:

The overwhelming feeling of fear that you may be experiencing can only be overcome by the God of the Bible, who promises His protection over and over in His word.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, I desire to be confident in your Word that tells me that you will “hide me” under your wings and keep me safe. Show me how to trust You more because You are my refuge. May my faith and hope be found in You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
