[Song of Songs] Like Magnets

DAY 2 OF 6

Love What God Loves

We can learn a lot about love and attraction as we read the book of Song of Songs. It portrays two people who were really in love and passionate about each other. Their attraction was a force, like magnets pulling them together. Have you ever wondered what God loves about the person you love or are attracted to? Have you considered looking for things that God would love in the person you are going to start a relationship with?

When the bride in Song of Songs starts talking, she does not talk about her groom’s physical traits but about his character. She says that his name is perfume poured out. His name is lovely and good. In the Bible, the name of a person embodies their character and attributes. The Bible says that a good name is better than riches and perfume. This is where the heart of God is: not in riches or looks, but in a good name, character, and reputation.

A woman should look for a man worthy of respect, a man of character. She should look for someone with integrity, someone who, when he says he will do something actually does it. What is inside of a person is more important and lasting than what is on the outside. This does not mean that physical attraction does not matter, because it does; you should be attracted to the person you marry. However, as Christians, this should not be our only or main focus. Beauty fades and riches disappear. If we are to love what God loves, we should pay attention to the other person’s character. People see what is visible, but God sees the heart.

Men should also pay attention to a woman’s heart and character. The bride in Song of Songs says not to look at her appearance. She is a girl who works in the fields, helping her family. She might have been disheveled. Her nails and hands might not have been up for an engagement photoshoot for social media. She wants the groom to look at her heart. She is lovely, a beautiful person on the inside.

If you are single, would you consider all these things when looking for the person you are going to marry? If you are married, are you appreciating all these things in your spouse? Let me challenge you to stop looking at what the world tells us to look at, and start looking at what God loves, start loving what God loves.
