A Gospel View of Worry

DAY 1 OF 5

Worry

This is how the dictionary defines the word, worry: The experience of feeling anxious and troubled about actual or potential problems that we face or that we may face.

This definition of the word worry applies to many of us today. As this new year, 2023, begins, many of us are anxious and troubled about our world today of high prices, war, the threat of nuclear war, floods and drought caused by climate change, medical pandemics, as well as about our own personal difficulties and challenges.

Matthew 6:24-34 is a brief passage of only eleven verses. And yet, the word, worry, appears six times in this brief passage. This is because, in this passage, Christ calls on the people of God to stop worrying so much about their daily lives.

What Christ teaches in this passage about worry shows us, first, the reality of the experience of worrying. Second, we see the reason for our worrying. Third, and most importantly, we see how the gospel of Christ rescues us from worrying. Together, these 3R’s give us the gospel’s response to worrying.

Over the course of this 5-Day Plan, from Matthew 6:24-34, we’ll explore how these 3R’s can help us in those days of so much trouble and anxiety, to allow the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ to rescue us from worrying so much about our lives.
