He Said, She Says: The Power of Praying God's Word

DAY 3 OF 10

How to Battle: Voices in My Head

Growing up, I had the best backyard. Filled with dirt and grass, I always had the perfect ingredients for my pretend restaurant’s specialty: salad. Green weeds for the base, yellow dandelions for garnish, and sand for the salad dressing.

My only customer was my daddy, who would pass by my makeshift kitchen on his walk from the back porch to his workshop. He always stopped to sample my menu and always amazingly cleaned his plate (by dumping it on the ground while I wasn’t looking, of course).

Sometimes my mind and body and emotions feel like that salad. A bit of worry here, add in some aches and pains as garnish, drizzle on guilt and insecurity, and add thoughts of loneliness for good measure. But just like that weed salad wasn’t good for me, neither is this struggle salad.

Wouldn’t it be great if our Heavenly Father would just dump it while we weren’t looking? But that’s not how it works. Let me loosely but powerfully retranslate 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 and add in a bit of Ephesians 6:

I am human, but I’m not supposed to battle like humans do. I’m supposed to use God’s weapons. (And He gave me the sword of the spirit, which is the Word of God.) I am to use this mighty, always-winning weapon to battle strong fears that try and keep me from being empowered by God. I am to use the Word of God to destroy any physical or mental or spiritual sickness that tries to prevent me from fulfilling God’s purpose for me. I am to capture my insecure thoughts that, though powerful, rebel against God’s best for me. I am to capture thoughts that, basically, call God a liar because they do not match what He says in His word. It’s my job to align my thoughts with His Word.

2 Corinthians 10 tell us that WE wage war. WE use God’s weapons. WE destroy false arguments. WE destroy imaginations. WE capture rebellious thoughts. Ephesians 6 tells US to put on the armor of God. WE take the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.

WE - Not God. Instead, your God has given you – His child – every tool you need for the battles of life. He’s equipped you in His Word to destroy your negative and worry-filled thoughts.

Let’s battle. Consider reading these verses aloud over your life.
