4. We can meditate

In the closing verses of Psalm 12, David now encourages us to meditate. First, we call out to the Lord and then we listen to Him. Talk to God and let Him talk to you! Notice how Psalm 12 ends in verses 6-8:“The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever. The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.”

Our world is full of wickedness and vile people. None of this can change God and God’s Word.“For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven. Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth” (Psalm 119:89-90). The world must drive us to the Word.

This is a beautiful picture of the daily fellowship we can have with God even on the most difficult days. Fix your mind on what can never be destroyed, which is the eternal Word of God.

The words of the wicked are lies, as this passage states, but the Lord’s words are always true. His word is pure in an impure world. It is preserved in a decaying world, and it will preserve you.

God’s Word says,“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee” (Isaiah 26:3).“Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them” (Psalm 119:165).

It has been suggested that the setting of Psalm 12 is one in which all the people and priests who aided David in Nob had been slain by Saul (1 Samuel 22). Everything familiar to him was disappearing, and David thought he might be next. So what did he do? He decided that he would go back and meditate on the words of the Lord. God’s Word will give you peace like nothing else can.

General Robert E. Lee was a man who knew something about conflict. His favorite hymn was “How Firm A Foundation.” One day, the great theologian, Dr. Charles Hodge, was reading the stanzas of that great song to a group of seminary students and was so overcome with emotion that he could not even articulate the last words. I love this particular portion of the song:

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in his excellent word!

If you think everything is shaking around you, and perhaps even you are a bit shaken today, just stop and spend time meditating on the unchanging truth of the Word of God. Remember, for the follower of Jesus Christ, the foundation is never destroyed. Our foundation is Christ Himself, and our God is never moved.

What can you do? You can trust the Lord. You can stay right with God. You can pray. You can meditate on the truth. The foundation is sure.

Keep close to the Lord, and keep your eyes on His righteousness in the midst of an unrighteous world. He will help you and use you to influence those around you.
