Daily Bible Reading, January 2023 - God’s Saving Word: Unity in Christ Jesus

DAY 16 OF 31

January 16

Introduction

After instructing his disciples, Jesus continues to teach and preach in different towns, and his ministry begins to attract much attention. While in prison, John the Baptist sends messengers to inquire about Jesus. Jesus then speaks to the crowds about John.

Scripture Reading

Matthew 11:1-19

Today’s Key Verse: Matthew 11:6

[Jesus said:] “How happy are those who have no doubts about me!”

Reflect

Reread verses 2-6. The Jewish people believed that God would choose and give power to a leader who would renew the faith of the people and fulfill God’s purposes for them. What did John’s messengers ask? How did Jesus respond? What is the Good News that Jesus talks about? Who are the messengers of the Good News today?

Pray

Lord Jesus, you bring the Good News of healing and hope to all who are in need. Empower me to proclaim your message of love and salvation and to serve the sick, the poor, and all who are in despair. I place my hope and trust in you. Amen.

And now, join us in praying for the men, women, and children in the Middle East who have been uprooted from their homes due to war. Loving God, we pray that your Word will ease the turmoil and pain in the Arabian Gulf and that those who suffer from poverty and violence will find hope and the truth found in the Scriptures. We pray that your Word will touch the lives of children in the Middle East and that you, their heavenly Father, will be revealed to them. May the generous support of Bible-A-Month donors help to spread your comforting Word rapidly throughout the region. Amen.

Tomorrow’s Reading

Matthew 11:20-30: Jesus reproaches the unbelieving towns.
