Standing On the Promises (We Can Stand Firm)
Russell Kelso Carter (1849-1928) wrote this beloved hymn. He occupied various teaching posts at the Pennsylvania Military Academy and composed it in 1886 while there. The time in which Carter lived was full of inventions and change. Some good, some bad. And much like today, I’m sure everyone was desperately looking for something unchanging to hold on to. There may be one popular saying today that hadn’t yet surfaced during Carter’s lifetime—you live your truth, and I’ll live mine. This little phrase sounds so nice and convenient, yet it leaves people still longing for something sure and solid. That, friends, is God’s unchanging word and promises that will stand firm forever. Let’s drink in the fullness of faith these many promises of God bring. Let them, no matter what we’re facing, bring us His hope, comfort, and peace anew.
