Cleansed by His Blood
David’s prayer, in Psalm 51, is a cry for forgiveness and cleansing after he had sinned by committing adultery with Bathsheba. In verse seven, he asked God to cleanse him with hyssop. Hyssop is a plant, which was often used in ancient times for ritual purposes. David’s mention of hyssop for cleansing had great significance.
In the Old Testament, the most noteworthy mention of hyssop was in Exodus 12:22, when the branch of hyssop was used to apply the blood of the Passover lamb on the doorpost. This application of the blood represented the love of God for His people and their cleansing and protection from the last plague of the killing of the firstborn. David wanted such love and protection from God too. David understood the significance in cleansing by the blood. Hence, he asked God to forgive him by cleansing him with hyssop.
We too have now received cleansing by the blood of the perfect lamb, the Lamb of God. When Jesus was crucified, John 19:29 (NIV) tells us, A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. The mention of hyssop at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ signifies that Jesus is our Passover lamb, and by the shedding of His blood, we have been cleansed. Through His blood our sins have been washed away and we have received grace. The blood of Jesus has the power to save us, cleanse us and wash us whiter than snow. Hence, no matter what plagues or sins we are dealing with in our lives, we must know that we are covered by the blood of Christ, which was shed on the cross.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your blood that was shed on the cross, through which all my sin and shame have been taken away. Thank You that I have been made a new creation. Amen.
