Christ as Man: A Study in LukeSample

Christ as Man: A Study in Luke

DAY 10 OF 24

What does it say?

Jesus commissioned 72 disciples to prepare the way for His message of the kingdom. He responded to a lawyer’s question by telling the parable of the Good Samaritan.

What does it mean?

Jesus directed the lawyer to Old Testament law when he asked about inheriting eternal life. As the lawyer recited the two greatest commandments, he realized he could not fulfill the law, so he tried to justify himself by limiting it. The parable of the Good Samaritan emphasized being a neighbor by showing unconditional love and commanding the lawyer to do likewise, placed an unattainable demand upon him. Since fulfilling the law was impossible, his only salvation would be recognizing his hopeless condition and casting himself on the mercy of God. Only then would he inherit eternal life.

How should I respond?

As Christ’s followers, we are called to love others with the same intensity that we love ourselves – not in the hope of getting something in return – but because of the mercy and grace we have received from God. Your opportunity to be a neighbor arises whenever you encounter anyone in need. By helping someone else, you are putting God’s love into action. Through your kindness, that person may recognize their most crucial need – salvation through Jesus Christ. How willing are you to share God’s love with someone in need? To whom can you be a compassionate neighbor today?

About this Plan

Christ as Man: A Study in Luke

Luke’s Gospel is a beautiful and powerful telling of the life of Jesus. Luke focuses on Jesus as the Son of Man, the foretold Messiah who came to “seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10). This Gospel shows us the “Upside-Down Kingdom” - that God uses what the world deems foolish and weak to shame the wise and strong.
