Philippians: A Life in ChristSample

Standing can be an underrated ability these days. But the ability to stand is vital for Christian believers. Paul, in his letters, frequently called believers to stand firm and he did so twice in Philippians.

“Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel.” (Philippians 1:27-28)

Standing isn’t as easy as it sounds. In this section of the letter, we see two women in the church in Philippi called Euodia and Syntyche who were in conflict with each other. Paul knows that the only way to withstand the colossal forces that come against us in life is to stand firm in Christ. Standing means withstanding.

“Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends! I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.” (Philippians 4:1-2, 5)

Their feelings have been deeply hurt and now have become more important than gospel unity. And it’s affecting everyone in the church in Philippi. Paul deeply loves these two women and the wider fellowship. His ultimate plea is a warning for them not to spiritually drift away. Paul wants to remind them that when he says they're “in Christ” or “in the Lord,” it means all that is Christ’s is theirs. And this truth changes the way they and we relate to God, the way we relate to ourselves, and the way we relate to others.
