Think about prom and homecomings and how fancy everyone dresses. Some of the outfits are extravagant! How someone dresses up, or looks can indicate how we measure what's valuable — by what we can see. When you think about it, can you say that your heart's condition matters most to you? Or have you been more focused on how you appear to others lately?
When God was looking for the next leader of Israel, it didn't matter if they had the most impressive appearance. What mattered most was the condition of the person's heart. God sent the prophet Samuel to search for the next leader, David. Surprisingly, it wasn't his skill or looks that stood out to Samuel. It was his heart. That's right, David became king not because he was the most impressive but because his heart was set on pure intentions.
What would it look like to have a heart that pursues God above anything else?
