“There was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, ‘ What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent, and come out of him!’ And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.” (Mark 1:23-26)

Jesus’ appearance did not just attract the attention of many people, but also of demons and unclean spirits. On many occasions, Jesus met people who were demon possessed. These evil spirits knew who Jesus was; “the Holy One of God”. But Jesus did not want them to spread this message. Instead, He told them to come out of these people — and they had no choice but to obey. They had to recognize Jesus’ authority.

The Bible takes the existence and power of demons seriously. The spiritual world is absolutely real. But it is also abundantly clear that God is stronger than any demon or spirit or idol. Jesus’ dealing with unclean spirits is a foretaste of what will happen at His return. Then He will put an end to their dominion. God will throw the devil and all his servants into a lake of fire and sulfur where they will be tormented forever and ever.
