Have you ever looked closely at a piece of string? Most of the time, a string is made up of a bunch of tiny threads, all twisted together, and you can see them. And they're all doing one thing, though, the same thing, even though they're different. It's one string. It's a piece of string. This is almost like a piece of rope. But they all have the same nature. It's the same way with the three persons of God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Here's what Hebrews 1:3 says about Jesus, and how He relates to God the Father:
He is the radiance of the glory of God, and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds the universe, by the Word of His power. After making purification for our sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
Jesus was, and is, the perfect— it says the imprint of God, exactly like the Father, and perfectly consistent with the Spirit. Their character, their nature, their ways—they interact with the world, just consistently. They're like one, just like the parts of this thread are one to make one thing, right. If we thought about it in human terms, we could say that even though they're all three different people, they share the same DNA. That'd be a way you could think about it. They're distinct, but they're inseparable, right?
If we want to know what God the Father is like, we can look at Jesus, His self-giving love, His humble, merciful nature, and His ruling power, show us that the father also has those traits. If you want to know what the Holy Spirit is, like, we just look at Jesus again. His character gives us that clear picture of what God in all three persons of the Holy Trinity is like. For our sake, God revealed His profound, otherworldly love. And, He's so gracious with us. He did it in a way that we humans could understand. He sent His Son as a human in the person of Jesus Christ. That's unbelievable. The eternal, uncreated Word became flesh for our sake!
Let's thank God in prayer together for that right now. Let's pray.
Jesus, You are the imprint of God. Exactly and perfectly. You have shown me just what a wonderful God I serve. Father God, You gave us Your Son, because You're merciful and compassionate. Holy Spirit, You are the deposit of God who lives inside us every minute, guiding us, holding us close. You are amazing, God, and we thank You for revealing Yourself to us. We thank You for the Word of God that tells us all these things, and for the Holy Spirit to open up our minds to understand it. Thank You. Amen.
Father, Son, Holy Spirit, You are one. That gives us great hope and great peace today. Amen.
