Real Hope: Back to Basics - God's KingdomSample
It Is Here
I was quite taken aback when I realised the kingdom of God is not a place but a space. And that it already is here, not something we are waiting on to show up when Jesus returns.
Jesus’ declaration in Mark 1:15 that ‘The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!’ was a billboard promoting what He ushered in centuries ago. The kingdom has come near, it’s here, and the invitation to citizenship extends to all.
Jesus lived, died, and lived again in accordance with what it means to be the King of God’s kingdom. The eternal ruler of a space for us to exist now and forever, not tied to one location, time period, or suit of armour.
What it looks like to live in God’s kingdom is expressed in various ways. You might not have noticed that Romans 14 explains it as ‘righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.’ This kingdom way of life is invoked during a passage about not causing anyone else to stumble in their faith because of something we choose to do (that we don’t personally believe to be sin). With a glorious goal of cultivating peace and mutual edification, relying on the Spirit to live well in the kingdom will empower us to serve Jesus Christ and please God. Incredibly, we’re told such citizen behaviour will also receive human approval. How amazing to live now in a way that God and other people cheer for.
