Gen Z Daters–This One’s for YouSample
Ghosting
Keep your dates close and your friends closer. Because whether you like it or not, and whether you do it or not, “ghosting” is alive and well in the Gen Z dating world. If you've never experienced it, "ghosting" refers to when someone you're talking to or seeing suddenly cuts off all communication without any explanation. It's a frustrating and confusing experience, especially if you thought things were going well.
While there's no way to avoid being ghosted altogether, there are some things you can do to lessen the chances of it happening. One is to be upfront about your feelings and expectations early on in the relationship. If the other person isn't on the same page, you'll know before things get too serious. Another is to take things slowly, gradually getting to know the other person instead of diving headfirst into a relationship.
Lastly, don't take it personally if it does happen. There are many reasons why someone might choose “ghosting” instead of breaking up in a more traditional way. Perhaps they're afraid of confrontation or simply don't know how to express their feelings. Whatever the reason, it's important to remember that ghosting is not personal. If you've been ghosted, it's not because there's anything wrong with you. It's simply a reflection of the other person's inability to communicate openly and honestly. And if you're considering ghosting someone yourself, think about how it would make them feel and opt to simply let someone know you’re no longer interested.
While there’s a time and a place to cut off all communication with someone to keep yourself safe in a bad situation, “ghosting” can be avoided in most situations. You can make someone’s dating experience better simply by choosing kindness and communication, even if that’s not everyone’s standards. It’s definitely the more Christ-like way to date.
Start today by asking God to help you date well with this prayer:
Dear God,
I pray that You will help me date well. Help me be patient and understanding, kind and thoughtful, slow to anger, and quick to forgive. I know that dating can be difficult, so I pray for Your guidance and wisdom. I also pray that You would give me the courage to be myself and not try to be someone I'm not. I trust who You say I am and that You will lead and guide me to the right person. Through it all, help me keep my heart and mind steadfast, focusing on You above all else. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
