The Genealogy of JesusSample

Imagine the legacy of a prostitute as a wife and mother. Would her husband respect her? Would she pass along worthwhile wisdom to her children? In the case of Rahab, the answer was yes. Rahab’s former lifestyle would have named her an unfit mother and wife, but the story we see through her son Boaz tells another story.

Salmon (Jewish) chose to marry and love Rahab, a Canaanite prostitute. She was unclean, yet he committed himself to her (Mat.1:1-5). Boaz, like his father Salmon, married an outcast, Ruth. Boaz loved Ruth as his father loved Rahab: without judgment of past sins.

Salmon and Rahab’s story displays the redemption and restoration of life found only in Jesus. Rahab was one of four women (out of 14 generations), alongside her daughter-in-law Ruth, mentioned in the genealogy of Christ. Through these two women and their husbands, the golden thread of grace was sewn through the generations until Christ came.
