Year of the Bible: Part Four of Twelve

DAY 1 OF 30

Two Strikes.

Moses led a group of people that God Himself had labeled "stiff-necked." They were not easy to lead and complained a lot. Moses' weariness is hard to imagine as he dealt with the complaining, bickering, and attacks on his leadership. Even God, who is patient and long-suffering, got frustrated at the complaining.

In our reading today, Moses loses his patience amid the grumbling. God told Moses and Aaron that He would provide water for the people once again. The limestone in the wilderness of Sinai had vast water reservoirs inside the rocks, and of course, God knew that! God gave Moses instructions to speak to the rock, bringing water out. Previously, God told Moses to release water by striking the rock. So, this time, the instructions were different.

Frustrated with the people, Moses struck the rock twice instead of speaking to it. He did not obey God's command and was forbidden to enter the promised land. He elevated himself and Aaron to be equals with God, saying, "Must we bring water out of this rock for you?" He took credit for an act of God.

Can you imagine how disappointed Moses must have felt? One "little" mistake, a choice made out of frustration, led to him missing out on fulfilling the goal of leading the people into the land God had promised.

Small things matter to God. Listening to Him is essential, and following His instruction is pivotal to walking in the fullness of the life He has for us. Our trust in God can be stretched when we are under pressure. We must choose Him over every distraction in our lives because we do not want to miss out on all the fulfillment He has for us.

Question: In what areas of life do you most easily lose patience?

Prayer to Pray: Father, I want to be fully obedient to you. Please help me to hear you when you speak. Please help me to resist distractions and obey you in every nuance of your requests of me. I want to honor you and fully accomplish your plans for me. Lead me by your Holy Spirit today! Amen!
