Through the Bible: LukeSample

Facing the World with the Word
All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!
Luke 4:36 (NIV)
Today’s reading is an all too familiar passage where we see Jesus being tempted by the Devil in the wilderness, even as Jesus was spending time fasting and praying.
The significant aspect of Jesus’ interaction with the Devil here is that in everything that Jesus responded to, he said, “It is written” or “it is said.” This is such a powerful response as Jesus was always referring back to the written word of God.
Consequently, in verse 13, the “devil left him.” Later on, as Jesus continued with his ministry, when He had cast an impure spirit out, we see in verse 36 that the “people were amazed and said to each other, ‘what words these are’.”
There is power in our words. Whatever the world may throw at us – when we respond to it by claiming God’s word, there is only one outcome – victory. May we intentionally respond to any situation by claiming and uttering God’s Word. This begins by spending time reading and meditating on the Bible.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me face any situation in this world by leaning on Your word. Help me to read and internalise your word so that I always use it as my first line of defense. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
About this Plan

As the longest book in the New Testament, Luke makes the purpose of his writing clear at the beginning: to investigate and write an account of the Gospel. As a Gentile physician, Luke has deliberately recorded many healing miracles of Jesus and His care for the social outcasts. The Gospel is summarised in this proclamation of Jesus, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
