Walk Through The Bible 365 - OctoberSample
Orphans And Widows Are Special
Jeremiah is proclaiming God’s Word of judgment on selected cities and nations. He has declared terror, destruction, and driven away the land’s inhabitants. In the midst of this declaration we find a special set of instructions for the fatherless and widows. The Hebrew word for "fatherless" is our English word "orphan."
It occurs forty-two times in the Old Testament, and often we find the word "widow" alongside it. The O.T. shows great concern for the fatherless and insists they be given justice (Dt 24:17, 27:19: Ps 82:3). This principle is significant for us to notice and act upon because of their helplessness. God has given special concern for the fatherless and so should we.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for allowing us to read of your concern for the fatherless and widows. Help me to apply this truth to my heart in order that I may take action for anyone you send my way to care for. Bless the fatherless and widows with your love and protection. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
